German designer Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director for Chanel and Fendi and one of the industry’s most prolific figures died Tuesday morning in France after being admitted to the hospital the night before.

Born in 1938, according to his website, though most placed his age at five years older, Lagerfeld’s health had reportedly swirled for several weeks after he missed a number of events – including Chanel’s spring/summer show last month.

His signature ponytail and dark glasses made him an instantly recognisable figure around the world.

The Fashion Industry weighed in, including Donatella Versace, Bella Hadid, Victoria Beckham and the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump.
